The Mental Health community is responding to the President’s linking the recent mass gun deaths to mentally ill people. It is a well know fact that those who struggle with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of violence than to perpetrate violence. To me, stating that mentally ill people are the cause of gun violence makes these already vulnerable individuals even more likely to be victims of violence.
Rarely will I use another person’s words to express my point of view. I am accountible for my own words and my own views. However, this is one of those rare occasions when the words of respected writers will appear on this blog.
